Title: A Garden Pavilion
Page: 186

Just steps from the main showhouse, but a world-of-enchantment away, is an octagonal-shaped tented pavilion where guest gather for cocktails and conversation.  Surrounded by lush tropical foliage and a fanciful topiary garden, the canvas and wooden structure, which peaks to a height of 20 feet, is small in square footage but big in decorative delights.

Designed by Albert Janz and Sherry Stein of Henry Johnstone & Co., the open-air pavilion is furnished garden-style, with a carved wooden settee and two matching armchairs covered in madras plaid.  Placed behind one of the chairs is an iron and fauxstone console table holding a large Victorian birdcage and a lamp fashioned from an old garden urn.

Furthering the pavilion’s indoor-outdoor connection is a delicate hand-painted wall mural depicting oak branches, blue jays, butterflies, ladybugs and caterpillars.  The detailed “moldings” below the mural are also hand-painted.

An octagonal hand-painted “rug” provides an eye-catching anchor for the alfresco scheme.  Executed in custom-mixed deck paints, the motif is a stylized version of an Oriental rug.
